Police on Friday (Sep 19) arrested three men, aged between 35 and 54, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities in three separate cases.

In the first case, a 37-year-old man was arrested by police in the vicinity of Segar Road for using his previous address to obtain illegal loans from loansharks, causing the flat's current occupant to become an innocent victim of loanshark harassment when the man defaulted on his payments.

The 54-year-old man arrested in the second case is a debtor-turned-runner. Preliminary investigations by police revealed that he assisted loanshark syndicates by procuring ATM cards and Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) from other debtors, and also gave away his ATM cards and PINs to loansharks to facilitate their unlicensed moneylending businesses. The man was arrested in the vicinity of Dickson Road.

In the third case, a 35-year-old man was arrested in the vicinity of Clementi Avenue 3. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is a debtor-turned-runner. He is believed to have assisted loanshark syndicates by procuring ATM cards and PINs from other debtors, and used them to perform ATM transactions for the loansharks.

Investigations against the 37-year-old suspect are still ongoing. The other two will be charged in the State Court on Sep 20. - CNA/ac
