An unnamed member of Malaysia’s ruling party Umno has reportedly filed a lawsuit against party president and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, in an effort to reclaim political donations deposited into his personal bank accounts.

Online news portal Malaysiakini reported that a complainant was seeking the repayment of RM2.6 billion (US$650 million), an unaccounted-for sum deposited into the Prime Minister’s accounts in August 2013 and purported to be  donations from Saudi Arabia.

That sum of money did not appear in Umno’s audited accounts in either 2013 or 2014, according to Malaysiakini, which the complainant said was a breach of Umno’s constitution and the Societies Act 1966.

The Umno member claimed the action was for the benefit of the party, and had also sought an injunction to prevent being removed or suspended from office as a result.

A news conference with further details was expected later on Friday (Aug 28).
