Hong Lim Park turned into a sea of pink as an estimated 26,000 people gathered for the Pink Dot event on 28 June.

However, organisers had a surprse in store this year. Instead of the usual pink dot, a blue heart emerged when participants turned on their torches just after sunset.

Pink Dot which celebrates the freedom to love regardless of sexual orientation, saw its largest turnout ever this year, breaking last year's record of 21,000 attendees.

This is the sixth year Pink Dot was held, but the first time it has prompted a protest by some Muslim and Christian groups, who started a social media movement against the event. Both the National Council of Churches and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) have since urged their communities to show restraint.

The event started at around 5pm, with participants in pink gradually filling up the park. Speakers such as Samantha Lo aka Sticker Lady and blogger Mr Miyagi took to the stage to discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and attendees were treated to performances by local artistes such as 'Broadyway Beng' Sebastian Tan and actress Selena Tan.
