The Parkway Parade shopping mall was shuttered on Monday (May 16) after a fire broke out in a shop the night before.

The fire broke out late Sunday night in the storeroom of a unit on the second floor of the mall, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said. No injuries were reported, they added.

The mall will remain closed for the rest of Monday for staff to clean up and check the site, Parkway Parade's General Manager Jenny Khoo said.

The SCDF said they were alerted to the incident at about 11.50pm on Sunday night. Officers forced their way into the unit and extinguished the fire with a water jet.

Because of the late hour, no customers had to be evacuated.

However, shoppers and staff found the mall shuttered on Monday morning and a fire engine parked outside the shopping mall.

67-year-old Mdm Lim, who works at Systematic Laudromat on the fourth floor, said she has been waiting to enter the mall since 7.30am. She also said she heard that the fire broke out at Isetan, which is at Level 1 and 2.

“Some of them who work at the office tower are allowed to go in. But those who work on the first to fifth floor are not allowed. The first and second floors are all flooded, and the third to fifth floors have no electricity,” she said.

SCDF said they are investigating the cause of the fire.
