A 42-year-old man was sentenced to five months’ jail on Tuesday (May 24) for threatening his ex-lover with explicit videos of the pair.
When the woman, a 38-year-old housewife, ignored his threats, he sent the videos to her husband and daughter.
The man, who is from Bangladesh, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count for criminal intimidation. He cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity.
A District Court heard on Tuesday that the couple had been in a relationship for about six years, from 2007 until 2013. The pair parted ways when the man returned to Bangladesh in 2014.
He came back to Singapore in 2015 and tried to rekindle their romance, but the victim refused. He then threatened her with multiple video clips of the pair engaged in sex acts, and told her he would send these to her family and friends if she refused him.
Between Mar 28 and Apr 6 this year, he threatened the victim thrice by sending her the explicit video via WhatsApp, and showing her screenshots of her family’s contact details. The man had even obtained the contact list of the parents’ support group of her son’s primary school.
The woman made a police report against her former lover on Apr 4. On Apr 6, when she persisted in ignoring him, he sent the video to her husband and daughter.
For criminal intimidation, the man could have been jailed up to two years, fined, or both.
