The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded three private bus operators contracts worth a total of S$5 million to operate the first batch of four Peak Period Short Services (PPSS) for two years.
The four PPSS will overlay existing feeder bus services to connect residents in Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Boon Lay and Woodlands to nearby bus interchanges and MRT stations.
In a statement on Tuesday, LTA said the services will be launched progressively from the second quarter of 2014.
Commute Solutions LLP clinched the contracts for two services.
It won the S$1.17 million contract for the PPSS from Ang Mo Kio MRT station to Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9, which will complement Service 268.
It also won the S$1.15 million contract to run the PPSS from Woodlands bus interchange to Woodlands Street 41, which will complement Service 912.
Tong Tar Transport Services Pte Ltd was awarded a S$1.7 million contract to run the PPSS from Lakeside MRT station to Boon Lay MRT station, which will complement Service 240.
ComfortDelgro Bus Pte Ltd won a S$1 million contract to run the PPSS from Bedok MRT station to Chai Chee Drive, which will complement Service 222.
LTA said all four PPSS will run at least five trips per hour during peak periods on weekday mornings and evenings, excluding public holidays.
More trips may be added depending on the demand for the services.
Further details will be announced closer to the implementation dates.
LTA said it put up a tender for five PPSS in September 2013.
But it has not awarded any contract for the service from Woodlands bus interchange to Marsiling Road, as the bids it received either did not comply with tender requirements or were not competitively priced.
LTA said the tendering process is meant to allow the most cost-efficient operators to win the rights to operate the new services.
Successful operators will have to apply for bus service licences from the Public Transport Council (PTC), which regulates bus services.
The initiative is in line with the Transport Ministry's announcement at the Committee of Supply 2013 to tap the resources of private bus operators to run shorter bus services to augment the resources of public transport operators.
It is also part of the government's Bus Service Enhancement Programme.
