A 64-year-old man was charged in court on Friday (Jul 22) for the murder of another man at Geylang earlier this month.

Toh Sia Guan is accused of murdering 52-year-old Goh Eng Thiam near Victory Food Court at Geylang Lorong 23 between 7.30am and 8am on Jul 9. If convicted, Toh faces the death penalty.

Clad in a red polo tee, shorts and handcuffs, the diminutive, grey-haired man stood still and expressionless as the charge was read out to him.

Mr Goh's ex-wife, son and two daughters were also present in court.

Police found Mr Goh lying motionless on the ground on Jul 9. He was pronounced dead by paramedics on the scene.

Channel NewsAsia reported that Mr Goh was found with a deep cut on the left side of the ear to the top of his head. He was lying in a pool of blood with his torso exposed, and a wooden stick was found beside him.

Toh has been remanded with permission to be taken out to aid investigations. His next court date is Jul 29.
