SINGAPORE: Guests and Members of Parliament at the National Day Rally
welcomed the various policies announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on  Sunday evening.

Nominated Member of Parliament Tan Su Shan said: "What I took comfort in was that while we dwell on the short-term issues, we did not ignore the long-term issues.

"The long-term issues to me are issues of fiscal prudence, issues of the fact that we were going to have an aging population and that we need to invest in infrastructure."

Professor Kishore Mahbubhani, dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, said: "First part of the speech, where he tried to explain very carefully that 'yes, the government will do more for you.' But let's be honest with ourselves, it is also going to cost us a bit more and we are going to find a way to pay for it.

"That nuanced message is very important for Singaporeans because it shows that we are not going down the populist route of saying you can get 'everything free of charge'. And that is a very important message he conveyed." - CNA/ac
