A seven-year-old girl died after her throat was slashed in playing fields - as her desperate mum raced to the scene crying: “No, no, it’s my little girl.”
A 15-year-old girl was later arrested in connection with the death of the youngster, who was named by police as primary school pupil Katie Rough.
Only two weeks ago, Katie stole the show as a bridesmaid at her parents’ wedding. She was stabbed on Monday afternoon an hour after school finished.
The little girl’s mum was alerted to the horror and raced to the scene in a car. But after seeing her wounded child, she dropped to her knees sobbing: “No, no, it’s my little girl. I think she’s killed her. Help get an ambulance.”
Katie died after the attack which took place around 4.30pm.
Her dad Paul Rough arrived at the fields in the affluent Woodthorpe area of York, North Yorks, shortly after his wife, Alison, 38.
The attack took place just over half a mile from the Rough’s home in Foxwood, York.
As medics worked on their daughter, the distraught mum paced back and forwards from the field where her daughter lay stricken in the mud while the dad stood slumped against a wall in despair.
The couple, who married two weeks ago, comforted each other as she was stretchered away with an oxygen mask on.
Katie was declared dead at hospital.
It is believed the horror was witnessed by several locals walking their dogs.
They are thought to have alerted police and paramedics to the horror after seeing a wound to Katie’s neck.
Consultant engineer Rob McCartney, 50, said he went to see what was happening after seeing “shadows” moving around outside.
“As I opened the door the girl’s mother was running into the street shouting ‘Get an ambulance’. I asked if she was all right and she said:
“No, no, she’s my little girl,” he said.
“I put on my shoes and went down the alley which runs along the side of my house and I could see a young girl lying on the playing field behind where we live.
“She was face down but on her side. I think I could see she was wearing boots.”
At that point there were already two police officers attending to her.“I turned around and saw the mother was in a state of great distress, crying and shouting out for her daughter, it was very upsetting to see her.
“She was moving back and forth between the playing field and the street and was crying out “she’s killed her, she’s killed her.”
“A few minutes later the girl was wheeled down the alleyway on a gurney trolley with an oxygen mask over her face. She was wheeled to an ambulance and it set off with its blue lights flashing.
“I thought ‘she’d be OK, she’d go to hospital and she’d be fine’. To wake up and hear she had died this morning was terrible.”
The couple who are said to have been together for years.
A shocked relative told how the rest of the family were “all together” adding: “We can’t get our heads around it. She was a bonny little lass.”
A good pal and work colleague of Katie’s 34-year-old dad Paul, said: “They are the last people in the world you would think something like this would happen to. “It’s torn them apart and will do forever. It’s absolutely appalling.”
While the arrested teen’s shocked mum was said to be “hardly able to talk” after hearing the news and was being comforted by relatives.
The girl’s grandparents arrived in the afternoon to lay flowers at the scene. It said: “Night night my darling princess Katie. Love Nana and Grandad xx xx”
