A 37-year-old man has been arrested for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities, police said in a news release on Wednesday (Mar 9).

According to the police, the harassment came to light when a report was lodged on Mar 5. The door of a unit at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 was fastened with a bicycle lock, with red paint splashed on it, police added.

After investigations to establish the identity of the suspect, police officers eventually arrested him along Orchard Road on Tuesday. He is also believed to have committed similar loanshark harassment in Bedok, police said.

The suspect will be charged on Thursday. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment are fined between S$5,000 and S$50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to five years and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.
