It’s not every day you get to randomly run into movie royalty out on the streets (well, unless you’re an avid hiker in Hongkong), but one fan got to enjoy this rare piece of good luck recently, which he shared about on his socials. Naturally.
The star he met was none other than Hongkong actor Tony Leung (Chiu-Wai, not Ka-Fai), who happily obliged the fan’s photo request. The post unsurprisingly generated lots of buzz on the internet… but not exactly for the reason we were expecting.
Both netizens and the media kept pointing out how “old” Tony, 58, looks in the shot. The reports we came across mercilessly zeroed in on things like his “sallow complexion”, “wrinkles all over his face”, and “receding hairline”.
Netizens also left comments like “A former nan shen (‘male god’, literally) has unexpectedly become so old”, “He looks like my dad, does everybody look like this when they age?” and the Chinese saying “Time is a butcher’s knife”, which is commonly used to describe how someone’s good looks can fade over time. Ouch.
Honestly, we have no idea if we’re missing something ‘cos we think he still looks fine, just not as well-styled as he would be at a public event. Plus, are people seriously expecting him to look exactly the same as he did in his 30s and 40s!?
Fortunately, there are those who agree with us and reminded everybody else that for someone who is pushing 60 and usually does not bother dressing up, Tony’s appearance is actually completely normal for his age. Some also gushed about how he still looks really handsome, and that the older he gets, the more he exudes a “mature charm”.
In any case, we reckon we’ll all get to see him clean up nicely again when his debut Hollywood flick, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, opens in theatres.
