'The Fierce Wife' was the most-talked about Taiwanese drama series last year and propelled its actors to household fame thanks to its riveting storyline of a housewife's failed marriage and her independent journey to heal and love again. The series created a huge ruckus when it aired in Taiwan and immense hatred was generated towards Sonia Sui's onscreen husband, James Wen, and the actress playing his mistress in the show, Amanda Zhu.
Fresh out of an eight-year-long relationship with Taiwanese actor Yao Yuan Hao which ended in May this year, James and Sonia's onscreen marriage similarly ended in shambles. As the speculated presence of a third party in Sonia and Yuan Hao's relationship mirrored the events in the drama, many dubbed the TV series a reel-to-real life take of the model-turned-actress' romance with her ex-beau.
While things may not look sanguine (romantically) for Sonia, on hindsight, this may prove to be a blessing in disguise. For one, her acting career is progressing in full-swing and the 31-year-old has proved her mettle with three films recently bagging nominations at three different film festivals.
Open to taking up 'all sorts of roles', when asked if she has plans to shift the focus of her career to silver screen projects instead of dramas, Sonia expressed hopes to maintain it at a 50:50 level. 'Drama has its advantages because it brings you closer to the audiences whereas for movies, you can pursue an artistic style and acting quality; both are different in that sense.'
With the spotlight on her newly-minted singlehood status, a cryptic Sonia briefly touched on her love life at the roundtable interview held at Intercontinental Singapore after the press conference on Friday afternoon. 'I think I just want to rest now and straighten out my emotions because this will only be fair to my next relationship.'
Sonia also maintained she's too busy for love right now and half-jokingly lamented at her lack of suitors, 'Why is it like that? I've been very busy at work and it's not easy to meet anyone new! (Guffaws)'
Comparing her personality to her onscreen character, Xie An Zhen, the Taiwanese artiste said they both have no qualms forking out as much as they can to make a relationship work, however, the actress 'will not give up' her career for marriage, unlike what An Zhen did in the show.
As 'The Fierce Wife Final Episode' marked the final curtain call to her character's story and a turning point in Sonia's life, the strutting tall and leggy starlet told xinmsn that it has also left a big impact in her life and imparted her with life lessons on love and relationships.
'It taught me how to face different kinds of friendship and relationship problems and taught me how to find strength from within to stand up again. I think this movie has given both the audience and me a lot of encouragement,' she shared.
So is she happy with the decision her character made at the end of the movie?
'I'm definitely satisfied with it since it is after all, one-half of my choice,' she laughed in reply.
