Paul Wong lashed out at band member Steve Wong in several microblog posts recently.
Ex-Beyond lead guitarist Paul Wong has publicly expressed his displeasure with his former bandmate Steve Wong via a series of microblog posts last week, one month before the band's late lead singer Koma Wong's 20th death anniversary on June 30.
Last Thursday, a reporter, who uploaded a photo taken with Steve, was reprimanded by Paul for hanging out with the 'bad guy'. The bassist reiterated his feelings by commenting on the post: 'He is always right. I won't die in peace if I don't defend myself!'
The harsh exchanges intensified after the band's former manager published a microblog post titled 'The Meaning of Beyond's 30th Anniversary'. In the post, he showed his support for Paul and hinted that Steve has been making use of his late brother's name to gain exposure. He further commented that Steve should 'reflect on himself and stop telling the fans that he is very kind'.
'The fact that Koma established Beyond doesn't mean that the band belongs to you. You may be his blood brother, but as a member of the band, you are on equal ground as Paul Wong and Yip Sai Wing,' he added before directing a comment at Steve, 'Perform with sincerity and that is enough. Everything else is superfluous.'
Paul re-posted his ex-manager's article later and wrote three separate posts on his microblog to lash out at his former bandmate.
'Steve, in what ways have I offended you? Even if you continue to badmouth me, your music wouldn't improve. What you actually need to do is to trust Sai Wing and me, and not the reporters you go out with. Can you just listen to me for once?' he wrote.
Paul also talked about the trio's concert five years ago where he performed two songs with Sai Wang. He said, 'We were angry and I was heartbroken. Wasn't the gig done in memory of Koma? If you didn't have so many costume changes, we could have sung a few more songs.'
In addition, sources revealed that Steve and Paul have been on bad terms for many years. In 2003, Paul and his then-girlfriend (now wife) Athena Chu were followed by the paparazzi while on a secret holiday to Koh Samui in Thailand. The two bandmates fell out when the couple later discovered that Steve divulged the news to the reporters.
An insider also claimed that Athena is very unhappy with Steve for using her husband's name to promote himself and feels that it is unfair to Paul. Although she is aware that there are many people who manipulate each other in the industry, to her, Steve's actions are 'as good as betraying one's friendship'.
