Cecilia Cheung Fat-Shamed After Netizens Compare Retouched Pics With Screenshots From Sisters Who Make Waves
Hongkong actress Cecilia Cheung may not always get the best comments about her performance on hit variety show Sisters Who Make Waves — she was ranked 27 out of 30 in the preliminary round — but if there’s one thing most seem to agree on, it’s that she’s done a stellar job at maintaining her figure and good looks.
Or at least, that seems to be the consensus based on several photos of Ceci that were shared on the official Sisters Weibo account earlier this month.
The 40-year-old was praised for her “fair and firm skin, oval face, slender waist, and long legs”, but viewers soon had a, um, reality check when the episode aired.
As it turns out, the pics had been — surprise, surprise — retouched, sparking intense discussions on the internet, and sadly, we see some disheartening, not to mention disappointing instances of fat-shaming.
Netizens and the media took screenshots of Ceci on the show to point out the supposed “big differences”, with some leaving unnecessary snarky remarks about her “stocky build” and “thicker” arms and legs.
Have these people seriously forgotten that they’re comparing a real human being to what is essentially a fake, digitally enhanced image?
Fortunately, there was also a group of more sensible folks who reminded the rest that Ceci is a mother of three children and that compared to other stars her age, she still looks damn good.
They also urged everyone not to hold celebs to such unreasonably high standards, especially for those who are mums (although we believe that should apply to everyone regardless of whether they have kids or not).
Back in January, Ceci admitted in an interview that it’s getting harder for her to stay in shape due to age and the fact that she has given birth three times. So yes, audiences should definitely cut her some slack.
In any case, we don’t think Ceci’s going to lose any sleep over those cruel comments.
She once made it clear that she isn’t bothered by haters who call her “old” and “passé”, and declared that self-confidence is one of the most important things in her line of work.
